1994: directed by Kevin Godley

Kevin Godley, as half of the team of Godley & Creme, directed some of the finest videos of all time, combining technical innovation and cleverness (the one that springs directly to mind, although nobody under the age of thirty will have seen it, is the Yes video "Leave It") - together they were just spectacular and one day the Author will actually own a copy of their collected videos. Kevin Godley on his own is just pretty good and not mind-blowing, as the following recap will describe. {On that note, if anyone can find a GOOD link on Godley & Creme's videos - not 10cc the band, please let me know, as I've been searching online for ten years without success.}

Two hands on opposite sides of a table hover over white buttons. Between them is an oversized light bulb which flickers a lot, and several butterflies or moths flutter about. The fingers never touch the buttons. Damon appears ever-so-briefly. The light bulb dims and goes out, approximating the mental state of the person watching this video. A single blue eye blinks spasmodically. Ooh, a chick in a bikini! Another chick in a bikini, this time floating by in a pool! Already, there is sensory overload!

Blue eye. Brown eye. Light bulb. Tower flats. Chicks in bikinis in swimming pools. Hunks in swimming pools.

Damon manifests completely in a black velour Fila zip-up, gives us a smouldering look and a wink. Does it make you randy, baby? His hair is a great shade of dirty-strawberry blond. Dave, drumming in a simple orange T-shirt, has awesome Crayola Brick Red hair. Brick Red was the Author's favourite crayon shade in the box of 64 Crayolas. Graham, playing sullenly, has left his glasses at home. Once in a while he glances uncomfortably at the camera, although his style (a weird red-and-blue top thing) is just as flash at Damon's and not as trendy.

Random Londoners wear T-shirts with single words from the lyric printed on them - "greece" - "on" - "holiday".

Behind the performing Blur are shots of socialising - more of those bikini girls and boys, photo snaps, swimming pools, neon. The girl in the "paranoid" T-shirt blows a kiss, and back in the studio, Damon rolls his eyes as if to say "I'm sorry, I love myself so much that I couldn't possibly have room for all of your love as well."

Alex wears a neat V-neck Tshirt with sunset-coloured stripes on the sleeves - looks like it cost 98p at Camden Market and probably did - and swings his head back and forth to the rhythm, emphasising that his new haircut is pretty much all bangs. Damon bounces, ignoring the poor Moog that's sitting there patiently waiting for him to pretend to play it.

Thongs! A "wasted" T-shirt! Graham is really into his faux playing. Damon relishes his close-ups. He's got really good skin. On "you get nasty blisters" he sticks his finger semi-down his throat, as if to say "We're so good it makes you want to puke!"

Water slides! Can-Can by the pool! Tongue-kissing skinheads (or are they playing Lady-and-the-Tramp with a bratwurst?)! Alarmingly, Damon actually lays a finger on the Moog, but just as quickly moves away, intimidated. Lager! Dancing! Water skiing!

The eyes blink, and a couple who is NOT the swingers-by-sunset on the cover of the "Girls & Boys" single, hold hands and kiss in front of an identical sunset. Nothing is wasted.

CUTE FACTOR: medium high.
VIDEO QUALITY: not so great for a Kevin Godley production. And it's too busy.
FUCKED UP FACTOR: Damon looks like the day after psychadelics. Hard to say with the others.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
