ABOUT FIEND
Start: June 2003/Finish: July 2004
Originally titled CONFESSIONS OF A FIEND
I wrote 110 pages of a draft of a completely different novel, STARS FALL, between September 2002 and June 2003. STARS FALL remains unfinished.
Changed from first outlined draft to final draft - several planned characters were scrapped and the prostitution angle was played down after I was called out on my overuse of the idea
Inspired by three books I love with "Confessions" in their titles: CONFESSIONS OF ST. AUGUSTINE, CONFESSIONS of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and CONFESSIONS OF AN ENGLISH OPIUM-EATER by Thomas De Quincey, as well as having been planned in my mind since I conceived the character of Orfeo Ricari in 1990; by studies on the role of women in revolution in Paris in the 19th Century, and by my various gay boyfriends over the years
Music listened to while writing: Cocteau Twins: Lullabies/The Pink Opaque/Tiny Dynamine/Echoes in a Shallow Bay/The Moon and the Melodies/Lorelei/Victorialand. Peter Murphy: Should The World Fail To Fall Apart/Love Hysteria. All Love and Rockets studio albums. Beethoven: Symphony #7. Mozart: Requiem Mass/Symphony #39/The Magic Flute. Outkast: Speakerboxx/The Love Below. David Sylvian: Secrets of the Beehive. Harold Budd: The White Arcades. Blur: 13/Think Tank. Dali's Car: The Waking Hour.
